What is AAC?
AAC includes all forms of communication, other than verbal speech that we use to communicate thoughts, needs, wants and ideas. It is also used to support somebody’s understanding of language.
AAC is used:
to support an individuals verbal speech when their speech is hard to understand
to support comprehension
instead of speech when an individual has little or no speech
There are many different systems we can use to communicate:
gestures, facial expressions, body language, pointing, sign
communication books, boards, text
communication devices and iPad apps
ProAACtive speech pathologists can support you to look at and trial different AAC options to find a communication system that works for you.
