Speech Pathology Week!

Communicate Your Way

Did you know that more than 1.2 million Australians need support to communicate?

Imagine if you could not use your voice or were suddenly in a different country and no one understood a single word of what you were trying to say. How can you communicate with those around you?

Communication encompasses more than using speech to talk, it involves exchanging meaningful messages with others. Messages can be exchanged via  multiple methods, including signs, gestures, written words, pictures, speech generating devices, etc.

Speech pathologists support people with communication needs to explore a variety of communication methods and use their preferred communication method to express themselves and engage with others in the community.

This week we celebrate the work that Speech Pathologists do to support people to communicate and highlight the importance of multimodal communication.

Can you think of a time where you used a different way to communicate with others?

Ps. Highly recommend this book by AAC Speech Pathologist specialist, Amanda Hartman, where you can learn more about multimodal communication:)
